Additional Descriptive and Event Information:

St. James Lutheran Church is a long established congregation in Sumter, SC. It was the first Lutheran Church in Sumter County and was organized in1890.

We believe ………….
The Bible is the living word of God, which still has the power to teach us how to live in the modern world; and it has the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us into the likeness of Jesus Christ. We are a conservative and traditional congregation, whose teachings and worship practices are in continuity with the apostolic faith of Holy Scripture, the early church and church fathers. We uphold and affirm the confessional writings of the Lutheran Church as a part of that apostolic faith. We are a Word and Sacrament community. Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and hearing Holy Scripture are means of grace, in which God in Christ transforms us, heals us, strengthens us, and saves us.

We are a people, who are centered in Christ…………….
At St. James, you become a part of the body of Christ, part of God’s family. There is a strong sense of family at St. James. We strive to be one in Christ as Christ is one with the Father. We take care of one another and lift up each other.

We are Christ Centered people, who are baptized to serve………..
We believe that salvation is by the grace of God in Jesus Christ alone, which we receive through faith alone. Part of that new life in Christ involves the flow of good works. Because we are saved, baptized people of God; therefore, we are sent out to do God’s mission in the world. We strive for our community to connect with the larger Sumter community by working with other churches and organizations so that we can meet the needs of others.

St. James also has an amazing elementary school……..
St. James Lutheran School was founded in 2005 to provide a Christian based education to the community of Sumter, South Carolina. It began with 9 preschool students and has grown to serve preschool through 2nd grade with 84 students. Third grade will be added in the 2012-2013 school year. Our goal is to provide God’s children with a safe, nurturing place where they can receive the highest standard of education academically and spiritually.
